August 2, 1854: “Three Young Gentlemen, Milwaukee Post Office”, by anon, published in the Milwaukee Daily Sentinel.
An indignant Badger girl sends us a tart reply to the matrimonial advertisement in the Wisconsin, from which we extract the following
“To those three nice ‘Young Gentlemen,’
Who have travelled in all climes,
With the freedom of a Yankee,
I would address these lines.
And permit me here to say. Sirs,
For I can think nothing less,
That I am sure you've never travelled
Very freely in the West.
“Judging from your advertisement,
I think it’s plainly to be seen,
Though in foreign climes you've travelled,
You are just a little green!
For you do not seem to know, Sirs,
That when the Badgers seek their wives,
They woo them like true hearted knights,—
They do not advertise.”
