August 29, 1856: “An Acrostic—Freedom’s Call”, by Red Jacket, published in The Daily Milwaukee News.
The anonymous author, Red Jacket, created this poem to bring attention to the anti-slavery campaign of the new Republican Party. In 1854 the party began inauspiciously in a yet existing schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin.
"We do not think our friend of the Sentinel, makes the best selections from his Nursery Rhymes for Young Freemonters. We publish the following from his yesterday’s paper:
Freemen! would ye our laws &
rights maintain?
Revere our father's deeds anD
country's fame?
Erase from fair ColumbiA
the stain,
Made deeper by each fraY
upon her plain?
O n then! with brave FremonT
as your guide,
Nor cease ’till victory deigns tO
crown our side;
’Till Fremont and DaytoN
shall preside!
